Roulette – How The Game Is Played

icoPosted by: alugoool  :  Category: Strategies for Roulette

The wheel game we know today is a dish sbalanced wheel with 38 numbered slots in it. The wheel is built into a table with a numbboard on it. The numbered squares on the board are arranged sequentially in three columns owith 0 and 00 at the top of the board. The numbers on the board are alternately colored red or black. The numbers on the wheel are not sequential. They also alternate, onred, one black all the way around the wheel, but the numbers are arranged so that the number 1 is across the wheel from the number 2; number 3 is across the wheel from number 4 and so on with number 35 being across the wheel from number 36 and 0 being across the wheel from 00.
The roulette wheel is kept spinning all of the time and speeds up once a game is about to begin. The croupier shoots or rolls a little ivory ball along the inner edge of the wheel in the opposite direction of its spin. As the wheel turns, the ball gradually loses momentum and simultaneously the wheel begins to slow. As the wheel slows, the ball eventually falls into one of the numbered slots.
Up to six players can be seated at the table at any one time. Roulette is the only game in which players purchase special non-value chips. Players have his or her own color so the dealer can tell them apart. The chips have a set value, depending upon the minimum bet set for that table. A player may also request a special value for his chips. The dealer will then specify the value of that particular colored chip by mating a sample chip, which is placed on the rim of the wheel. Players may also bet larger amounts by using $1, $5 and $25 regular casino chips.

Nine Types Of Bets
There are a total of nine types of roulette bets than can be played. Six are inside bets and three are outside bets. The bets inside the 0, 00 and 1-36 playing area are as follows. It is important, if you want to play this game successfully, to become familiar with these nine types of bets.
Inside bets: All bets on any of the numbers on the wheel (board) are known as inside bets. You may make inside bets on as many numbers as you wish. You can make them in any combination that you wish. The table will have a minimum bet, for example $1 on any one number. It is also important to realize that the casino may have a minimum and maximum spread for inside bets. For example, there will probably be a $5 minimum spread on a $1 table. This means that you must wager at least $5 when betting on inside numbers. This $5 may be spread out over five numbers or may all be placed on one number.
The Straight-Up Bet: The player is betting that one number will come up. Any number can be bet, including the 0 and the 00. The payoff is 35:1.
The Split Bet: Players are betting that one of two numbers will come up. Bets are placed to overlap the two numbers. Payoff is 17:1. The 0 and the 00 can be made to overlap the two numbers or placed on the line separating the second and third dozen. It is the only bet that can be made at two places in the layout.
The Street Bet: Players are wagering that one of three numbers will come up. Bets can be made at several different places, at the end of the line and three bets involving 0 and 00. A winning bet pays 11:1.
The Corner Bet: Players are betting that one of four numbers will come up. Bets are placed at the intersection of the four numbers. The payoff is 8:1.
The Five-Number Bet: There is only one five number bet on the layout: 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3. The payoff is 6:1. It is the worst bet on the table, with a house edge of 50 percent, higher than any other bet. This bet does not exist on the European game since there is no 00.
The Line Bet: The player is betting that one of six numbers will come up. Bets are placed on the intersection of the two lines of three numbers. The payoff is 5:1.
Outside bets. Outside bets are those placed on the board other than on one of the numbers or the 0 and the 00. They are the even-money, column and dozen bets. The three outside bets and they are as follows.
Even Money Bet: There are actually three kinds of even money bets. They are: a) high (19 – 36) or low (1 – 18), b) a bet on red or black, or c) a bet on either even or odd.
Column Bet: A column bet is a bet on any of the 12 numbers in any one of the three long columns of numbers in the layout. It has a payoff of 2:1.
Dozen Bet: Like the column bet, the roulette table is divided into three sets of 12. The first is all of the numbers 1 – 12, the second set is 13 – 24 and the third set is 25 – 36. These bets, like the column bets, pay at 2:1.

When you sit down at the roulette table, you will be given special colored roulette chips when you first buy into the game. You declare their value to the dealer (this can be any amount between the minimum and maximum table limits). The dealer places a value button or marker on your colored chip and then places both on the rim of the wheel to remind him and to alert the next dealer to the value of your chips. Every player at the table will use different-colored chips to prevent confusion and to help the dealer determine which wager belongs to whom. A placard on the table will tell you the minimum and maximum betting limits for the chips.
Each player will be allowed to place his or her bets. When all of the bets are on the table the croupier or dealer will spin the wheel. He or she will then shoot an ivory ball into the dish shaped wheel so that it is rotating in the opposite direction of the wheel.
The ball spins against the wheel until it slowly begins to lose momentum. When it begins to lose momentum the dealer begins slowing the wheel. The ball bounces across the numbered pockets as it continues to slow until it finally comes to reset in one. That is the number that wins. All of the numbers (not bets) lose. The exception to this is when the surrender or ‘en prison’ option is in play.
Surrender is offered on some tables but not all. The surrender option applies only to outside bets that pay even money. This includes the red/black, even/odd or high/low. If the ball lands in the 0 or the 00, your bet stays on the table ‘imprisoned’ or frozen until the next spin of the wheel. This next spin then determines if your bet wins or loses. This is important because it effectively reduces the house edge of 5.267% to only 2.63% on these outside bets.
Roulette is purely a game of chance. No one, not even the dealer, can influence where the ball will land. Pick a number and the odds are 37 to 1 against you.
That is pretty high. In fact, for this and a number of other reasons, some people claim that the game is unbeatable. For most people, it is.
But, you can win at roulette. A few people are very successful at this game. To be successful, you must train your mind and discipline yourself not to make the mistakes that trap all of the other players. Here is a short list of eight concepts or truisms that you must master. These are absolutes. You must master these to be successful at this game.
